What twenty years of sauna research records
Regular sauna bathing has been studied for decades. The figures below are associations reported in peer-reviewed research on sauna bathing, with each study named. They describe populations, not any individual outcome.
- 63% Fewer sudden cardiac deaths with 4 to 7 sessions a week vs onceLaukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015 · association
- 4 to 7× Sessions a week in the strongest findingsKuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study
- 41% Lower rates of respiratory disease with 4+ sessions a weekKunutsor et al., European Journal of Epidemiology, 2017 · association
Cardiovascular adaptation
Repeated heat exposure is associated with better blood-vessel function, lower arterial stiffness and healthier blood pressure. The response resembles light aerobic work with no mechanical load.
Heat-shock proteins
Heat triggers heat-shock proteins, which help protect and repair other proteins. In an animal study, heat treatment reduced muscle loss during immobilization.
Selsby & Dodd, American Journal of Physiology, 2005 · animal model
Red and near-infrared light
Red and near-infrared wavelengths are absorbed by mitochondria and are studied for muscle recovery and exercise soreness. Effect depends on irradiance and distance.
Individual results may vary. The Finnish studies are observational, mostly in middle-aged men using traditional high-heat saunas; they show associations, not proof of cause, and did not test any Heavenly Heat model. Heavenly Heat saunas are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant or have a heart or other medical condition, talk to your doctor before using a sauna.

$6,199Your sauna vs. the gym sauna
Four to seven sessions a week is where the research is strongest. That is hard to do with a sauna that is closed, cold or full when you get there.
sauna
Available every day, at the hour you actually train
Often closed when you would use it, or full when you need it
Runs at the temperature you set, every session
Often cooler than the research protocols, and sometimes out of service
Twelve steps away, no drive attached to the habit
A drive added to a habit that only works when it is easy
Solid untreated hemlock, no glue, air you chose
Built to a specification you did not choose and cannot inspect
Yours alone, or shared with whoever you train with
Shared, humid and time-limited when it is busy
The one thing that makes or breaks a daily sauna habit
You are about to run this four to six times a week, heated, in a closed room. Many saunas give off adhesive and finish fumes when hot. Breathing that during a recovery session is the opposite of why you are in there.
Durable, Clean Construction
Built with natural woods, no glues or adhesives, and all organic materials for sensitive users.
Tested Low EMF / ELF
Grounded heaters and Faraday shielding. Magnetic field under 2 mG at the seat, measured by Vitatech, an independent EMF lab.
Third Party Safety Tested
VOC levels inside a heated 2-person sauna tested at or below the showroom air (Primary Environmental, 2024).
Premium Engineering
Precision heating technology backed by 35+ years of American craftsmanship.
Five ways people who train use it
Research-backed, and felt in the next session.
-
Recovery between sessions
Heat raises circulation and triggers heat-shock proteins, which are involved in tissue repair. A session may support circulation and muscle recovery without adding load to anything you just trained. On the red light model, red and near-infrared light may help ease exercise soreness, before or after training.
-
Sleep on training days
Late, hard sessions can push sleep back. Falling asleep follows a natural drop in core body temperature, and heating up then cooling down exaggerates that drop, which has been associated with falling asleep faster. If you track sleep, it is the number most people watch.
-
Cardiovascular work without the load
Heat makes the heart work like light exercise: heart rate climbs and vessels widen. Over time, regular sauna use is associated with more flexible arteries and healthier blood pressure. It is aerobic work your joints never feel, which makes it usable on rest days.
-
Shift into recovery mode
Training, the commute and the phone all keep you in "go" mode. Twenty quiet minutes of heat is one of the few habits that reliably helps you slow down and switch off, on a schedule you control.
-
Skin, on the red light model
Red light is studied for skin texture, firmness and collagen, through the same mitochondrial mechanism studied for muscle. People who train outdoors often ask about it.
Individual results may vary. Heat and red light are part of a recovery routine, not a treatment for injury or a medical condition.

Recovery from a hard session

Soreness in a specific area

Keep the panel 12 to 36 inches away: more is not better. Cool down after a session; for sleep, the cool-down is the part that matters. Drink water, and skip a full heat session right before heavy lifting.
Real results from real people
-
I bought it for detox. I stayed for the sleep.
-
Best investment for my health. After just a few uses, my muscles feel less sore post-workout and my stress levels have dropped significantly. Easy to install and even easier to use.
-
I recommend Heavenly Heat to patients with chemical sensitivity. The clean construction and ultra-low EMF make it the only sauna I trust for my most sensitive patients.
-
I have MCS and was terrified of off-gassing. Zero issues. No smell, no reactions. This sauna has become my healing sanctuary. Thank you for building something truly clean.
-
The sleep improvement alone was worth it. I track with an Oura ring — my deep sleep went up 40% within the first two weeks of daily use.
-
I get in straight after lifting, before I shower. Twenty minutes and the rest of my evening is different.
-
My gym has one. It was closed, cold or full most of the time I wanted it. This one is twelve steps away.
-
My wife trains too, so we both use it. Having room for two is the reason it gets used as much as it does.

Recovery sauna FAQs
Still deciding? Our sauna specialists are happy to walk you through anything we have not covered here.
When should I use it relative to training?
Within a few hours after a hard session for recovery, or two to three hours before bed for sleep. On rest days it works as low-load cardiovascular work. The red light panel on a specific area is fine before training, but avoid a full heat session right before lifting or a hard effort.
Will heat undo the training?
Heat is not mechanical load. It raises circulation and drives a cardiovascular response without stressing the tissue you trained, and heat after training has been studied as a support for adaptation rather than something that blunts it.
Is red light worth it over a standalone panel?
A standalone panel gives you the light, but not the heat, the sweat or the room, and it is a second device and a second slot in your day. The RL2 panel is 42.5 by 12.5 inches at high irradiance, built into the cabin so it is there every session.
How hot does it get, and do I have to sweat a lot?
Infrared saunas typically run at about 110 to 150°F, well below a traditional sauna. Much of the response comes from your body warming up rather than from how much you sweat.
Is red light therapy safe?
It is considered safe when used as directed. It is non-invasive and emits no UV. Avoid looking directly at the light, and use eye protection if you find it uncomfortable.
How often, and how far from the panel?
Most people use it 3 to 7 times a week for 10 to 30 minutes, 12 to 36 inches from the panel. Closer is not better: the extra energy turns into heat.
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. The sauna plugs into a standard US three-prong outlet, and a dedicated 15A circuit is recommended. The red light panel plugs in separately; running both on one circuit at the same time needs 20A. We are happy to confirm your setup on a call before you order.
What are the EMF levels, and who tested them?
Under 2 mG magnetic field and under 7 V/m electric field at the seating position, with grounded heaters, Faraday shielding and no RF. The EMF numbers were measured by Vitatech, an independent EMF lab (read the report). Indoor air (VOCs) was tested separately by Primary Environmental. We do not say "EMF-free": it is not a testable statement.
