If you have ever walked into a new car, a freshly painted room, or a hotel sauna and felt your head go tight within minutes, you already know something most sauna buyers never think about. Heat does not just warm a room. It drives whatever that room is made of into the air you are breathing, and it does it faster the hotter the room gets.
Now ask the question that decides this purchase: would you run this daily, in a closed house, from September to March? Most infrared saunas are specified for occasional use in a ventilated space. That is a different product from one you sit inside every evening for six months. A large share of the cabins sold today are built from engineered wood panels held together with adhesive, sealed with a finish, and then heated to 150°F for an hour a day. Formaldehyde, one of the compounds released by common wood adhesives, is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group 1 carcinogen.

1. Built for the body that reacts to everything
Most people shopping for a sauna are chasing recovery. A smaller group is doing something harder: looking for one room in the house that will not set them off. If you react to fragrance, new furniture, fresh paint or off-gassing carpet, a conventional sauna is one of the worst rooms you can sit in. It is a small sealed box, built from engineered wood and adhesive, then heated until everything inside it volatilises.
Heavenly Heat was founded in 1988 specifically for chemically sensitive patients, and every decision in the cabin still follows from that. The material list was not chosen for cost, and it was not chosen for looks. It was chosen because it is what a sensitive body can tolerate at temperature, for an hour, every day. That constraint is not something a competitor can retrofit into a spec sheet next quarter.

2. No glue used anywhere in the construction
Read the competition carefully and one phrase keeps repeating: non-toxic glue. Certified non-toxic adhesives. No toxic glues or resins. It is a sentence that only exists because there is glue. Adhesive is the category default because it is fast and cheap, and in a box at 150°F it is also the first thing to give up its chemistry into the air.
Heavenly Heat uses no glue at all. The cabin is held together by joinery and mechanical fastening, which is slower to build and considerably more expensive to produce. It is also the only version of this claim that does not need a qualifier standing in front of it.

Are there adhesives anywhere in the panels? A real answer is specific. "Zero-Glue Construction" and "no adhesives" are specific. "Safe materials" is not.
3. Solid 100% Canadian hemlock. No plywood, no veneer, no particleboard.
A cheap sauna looks like wood. Cut into the wall and you find something else: thin layers of ply bonded with resin, or particleboard faced with a paper-thin veneer. That construction is not only a durability problem. Every one of those layers is a glue line, and every glue line is sitting inside a heated room with you in it.
Every panel is solid, non-resinous Canadian hemlock, straight through. Nothing laminated, nothing faced, nothing pressed. Hemlock is used because it is non-resinous, so it will not weep sap or aromatic compounds once it gets hot, which is exactly what cedar does.
The same question applies to the parts nobody photographs. Speaker covers, light covers, trim: in most cabins every one of those is plastic, sitting in the same heat as the walls for the same hour a day. Ours are wooden speaker covers rather than the standard plastic, glass-covered chromotherapy rather than plastic, and 8mm tempered glass.

4. The two numbers almost nobody prints
Every brand in this category advertises low EMF. Almost none of them publish a figure, which makes low EMF a yes or no answer rather than a measurement. Be more sceptical still of "EMF-free" or "completely safe." Neither is a testable statement, and a company willing to say one will say others. And there is a second number, ELF, which measures the electric field rather than the magnetic one. Across the entire competitive set, almost no brand mentions it.
Heavenly Heat publishes both: EMF below 2 mG and ELF below 7 V/m, with grounded heaters, Faraday shielding and no RF, independently tested and verified by Primary Environmental. That is the whole test worth applying when you compare any two saunas. Ask for the number. Then ask for the second number. A company that has actually done the work will have both on hand, and will tell you who measured them.

5. The small parts, where a company decides whether it meant it
Every sauna in this category ships with roughly the same list: a control panel, speakers, coloured lighting, a door. On most cabins those parts were bought from a catalogue and bolted on, which is why they are almost always plastic. Plastic is cheap, it is available, and nobody photographs it. It also spends an hour a day at temperature, in a sealed room, with you in it.
So the fittings are a useful tell. They are the parts where a manufacturer decides whether the material standard they advertise for the walls applies to everything else, or only to the surfaces that appear in the photographs.
In ours the speaker covers are wood rather than the standard plastic, the chromotherapy lighting is glass covered rather than plastic, the door is 8mm tempered glass, and there is a grounding port at floor level so you can use grounding products while you are in there. On the red light model the panel itself lifts out and a glass panel drops into its place, so the light can be used outside the cabin and the sauna still works normally. None of that shows up in a hero shot. All of it costs more than the catalogue version.

6. The $2,000 sauna is the expensive one, and in year four you find out why
Budget infrared cabins land between $1,500 and $3,000 and typically carry a one to two year warranty. Sauna blankets cost less again and are usually finished inside a year. Neither of those is the real price. The real price is what you pay each time you replace it, plus what you were breathing in the meantime.
Then there is the part nobody costs in at all. The brands running the loudest advertising in this category are, for the most part, recent arrivals. When a panel fails in year four, the question is not really whether the warranty covers it. The question is whether the company is still there, and whether anyone picks up the phone.
