Improving People's lives since 1988
Falling asleep is triggered by a drop in core body temperature. Twenty minutes of heat, two hours before bed, is how you make one on purpose.

What You've Already Tried
01
Blackout blinds
Improves the conditions. Does nothing to the drop.
02
The cold room
Cools the air around you. Your core temperature is a separate number.
03
The supplement
Attempts to nudge the endpoint chemically. Leaves the signal alone.
04
The rule about screens
Right signal, wrong lever. And you break it anyway.
None of them create the drop. That is not a discipline problem. It is a missing variable.
The Two Signals
Temperature
The moment your core temperature starts to fall is the moment sleep onset is triggered. Heating up first means it falls from higher, and further.
Light
What you saw during the day, and what you are seeing now, sets when that fall happens. Blue-heavy evening light is the part that pushes it later.
Heat, followed by cooling, creates the drop directly. It is the same thing a hot bath was doing for your grandmother, done at a temperature that actually moves core body heat.
The Evening Protocol
What The Last Two Hours Look Like
The mechanism only works if the timing does. Nothing below requires anything you do not already own except the heat.
Step 01
Heat
2 to 3 hrs before bed
15 to 20 minutes at a temperature you find comfortable
Raises core temperature so it has further to fall
Step 02
Cool down
Immediately after
Sit, don't shower hot, let it happen
The drop is the mechanism. Skip this and you skip the benefit.
Step 03
Lights down
After the cool down
Step 04
Sleep
On the way down
Go to bed while your temperature is still falling
That descent is the signal. Meet it rather than waiting it out.
Consistency matters more than intensity: the research on sauna and outcomes is dose-dependent, and most people who use it for sleep settle at four to six evenings a week. On a red light panel, ideal distance is 12 to 36 inches and more is not better.

What The Research Shows
What The Sleep Research Shows
Regular sauna bathing has been studied for decades. What follows are associations reported in peer-reviewed research, with the study named and the limit stated underneath each one.
4 to 7×
The effect is dose-dependent
The strongest associations in the Finnish cohort came from four to seven sessions a week, not from hotter or longer ones. Frequency at that level is a home schedule rather than a gym one, which is the argument for owning rather than visiting.
63%
Lower rates of sudden cardiac death
Recorded in the frequent-use group against the once-weekly group over twenty years of follow-up. It is on a sleep page because sleep is where most of the body's repair happens, and the two compound.
JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015 · association, not proof of cause
The drop
Passive heating before bed and sleep onset
Warming the body one to two hours before bed has been associated with falling asleep faster and more time in deep sleep, through the exaggerated fall in core temperature afterward. This is the page's central mechanism and the reason step 02 exists.
Haghayegh et al., Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2019 · association, not proof of cause
Red, not blue
Evening light and melatonin
Short blue wavelengths are the ones associated with melatonin suppression in the evening. Red and near-infrared light does not carry them. That is a statement about the light rather than a claim about your sleep.
Brainard et al., Journal of Neuroscience, 2001, melatonin action spectrum · a property of the light, not a claim about your sleep
Observational cohorts describe association rather than proof of cause, and the Finnish studies used traditional high-heat saunas rather than any specific model. Nobody can promise you a number. Individual results may vary.
Built To Sit Beside A Bedroom
A sauna used for sleep runs in the evening, in the room beside your bedroom, with the house closed up for the night. Many saunas off-gas adhesives and finishes when heated. Ours have been built without them since 1988, for people who could not tolerate an ordinary sauna, and the EMF numbers are published because a cabin next to a bedroom is exactly where they matter.

Common Questions
2 Person Red Light Therapy Infrared Sauna FAQs

Won't heat before bed keep me awake?
It's the most common assumption and it gets the mechanism backwards. The heat itself is not what helps you sleep, the cooling afterward is. Heating up two to three hours before bed, then letting your body cool, exaggerates the natural temperature drop that triggers sleep onset. Sauna immediately before lying down, or a hot shower straight after, works against you. The timing is the whole protocol.
How long before bed?
Two to three hours. That gives core temperature time to fall past where it started. Later than that and you may still be warm when you lie down, which is the version of this that doesn't work.
Is red light before bed a problem?
Red and near-infrared light does not carry the short blue wavelengths associated with melatonin suppression, which is what makes screens and overhead LEDs a problem in the evening. It is the reason the panel can be used at night when almost nothing else with a switch should be.
How hot does it need to be?
Infrared cabins run around 110 to 150°F, well below a traditional sauna. You do not need to sweat heavily for the mechanism to work; you need core temperature to rise enough that it has somewhere to fall. One customer who says she does not sweat easily reports sweating within ten minutes at 110 to 115°F.
Is red light therapy safe?
It is considered safe when used as directed. It is non-invasive and emits no UV. Do not look directly at the light, and use eye protection if you find it uncomfortable.
What is near infrared, and how is it different from red light?
Depth. Red light acts at the skin's surface and shallow tissue. Near infrared penetrates further toward muscle and joint tissue and stimulates cellular energy production. Our near infrared wavelengths are 810, 830 and 850 nm.
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. The sauna runs on a standard US three-prong outlet with a dedicated 15A circuit recommended, and the panel plugs in separately to any standard outlet. Running both on the same circuit at once requires 20A. Confirm on a call before you order
What are the EMF levels, and who tested them?
EMF below 2 mG and ELF below 7 V/m, with grounded heaters, Faraday shielding and no RF. Independently tested and verified by Primary Environmental. We do not use the phrase "EMF-free," because it is not a testable statement.
